Silicon Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation Honors Applied Materials, Inc.
SARATOGA, CA -- The Silicon Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation hosted a brunch last Sunday, September 7th, in the gardens of Mary Ellen and Mike Fox Sr. to honor Applied Materials, Inc. for its generous support in the effort to establish a children’s hospital in San José.
In the spring of 2003, the Silicon Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford selected the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center as their partner in building a children’s hospital in San José. The three institutions are in the process of determining the financial feasibility of the project, as well as the programs and services that the new children’s hospital would provide.
“SVCHF has been working toward establishing a children’s hospital for over three years, and Applied Materials has been with us from day one. We cannot thank them enough for their unfaltering support and dedication to the children of Silicon Valley,” said Kathleen King, Chairperson of the Silicon Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation.
If all goes well, groundbreaking for the new hospital could occur in 2006. It is contemplated that the children’s hospital will feature a pediatric intensive care unit as well as four to six operating rooms. Physicians from the local community, Packard Children’s Hospital and Valley Medical Center would practice at the facility.
“Applied Materials is delighted that our active participation and financial support have helped to produce this powerful partnership that shares a compelling vision,” said Mike O’Farrell, Vice President of Global Community Affairs at Applied Materials, Inc. “We believe that this children’s hospital will improve the regional infrastructure and quality of life for local families for several generations.”
The idea of establishing a children’s hospital in San José began in 1999 and has since gained strong momentum and broad community support. In attendance yesterday expressing their support of SVCHF’s efforts were State Assembly members Rebecca Cohn and Manny Diaz (both SVCHF advocates), Santa Clara County Supervisors Liz Kniss, Blanca Alvarado, and Jim Beall, San José City Council members Cindy Chavez and Linda LeZotte, Sunnyvale Mayor Julia Miller, Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group President and CEO Carl Guardino, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith, and San José Mercury News Publisher Joe Natoli. Attending from the SVCHF’s Board of Directors, was Richard Brenner, Linda Durnell, Dr. Chris Halaburka, Kathleen King, and Allan Kramer, the Honorable Ron Del Pozo, Dan Doore, Hon Lien, John Mills, Mike O’Farrell, Dr. Don Prolo, and of course the host of the party, Mike Fox Sr. also attended. The physicians joining the celebration were Dr. Chris Whitney, Dr. Anna Lee, Dr. Kimberly Pitts-Davis, Dr. Don Stemmle, Dr. Laura Stemmle, Dr. Marty Fishman, and Dr. Alan Goldsobel.
About Silicon Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation
Concerned physicians, business leaders, and parents created the Silicon Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation in the fall of 1999. This group shared a common vision of making quality health care available to all children of Silicon Valley. Applied Materials, Inc. provided critical seed funding to the group, which completed a needs assessment and business plan and then united local physicians, parents, community leaders, and businesses to work with hospitals in the area to establish a new center of excellence for pediatric care in San José.
