1.Q: What shape will the new children's hospital take?

A: We envision a hospital in South San José that could start as a hospital within a hospital. We are also exploring an ambulatory building that would include pediatric sub-specialists and diagnostic services.

2.Q: Who will run the hospital?

A: The proposed children's hospital will be owned and operated by Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.

3.Q:  What hurdles must be overcome for this project to go forward?

A: Through a process of program planning, facility planning and financial feasibility assessment, LPCH will confirm that together, we can create a financially sustainable children's hospital. Working with the leadership of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, we will ensure that we have the support of the county, community and physicians in the area. We also will need substantial philanthropic support from the community in order to realize our vision.

4.Q:  What are the next steps?

A:  LPCH must complete the feasibility assessment of the project.

5.Q:  What would make the proposed hospital financially feasible?

A:  The proposed project must be able to operate on a break-even or better basis financially, and the capital investment required for the project must be achievable through community support and the resources and capital capacity of LPCH

6.Q: How much will this hospital cost?

A: Current hospital costs are running above $1 million per bed.

7.Q: How will funds be raised to build the new facility?

A: If the project is determined to be feasible, it will be financed through a combination of philanthropic support, debt financing, and internal funds from LPCH.

8.Q: How many children need inpatient care in Santa Clara County?

A: Our initial analysis indicated that more than 50 children (excluding neonates) on any given day are hospitalized throughout the greater San Jose area in hospitals other than LPCH.

9.Q: Will any of the Lucile Packard doctors want to work down in San Jose?

A: Many of the LPCH pediatric faculty sub-specialists practice in Southern Santa Clara County already.

10.Q: What will the new children’s hospital be named?

A: No name has been selected at this point.

11.Q: When will the children’s hospital open?

A: It is premature to answer this question until all of the parts of the feasibility study have been completed.
